Why They Fell

Time after time newcomers have tried to keep to themselves certain facts about their lives.
Trying to avoid this humbling experience, they have turned to easier methods.
Almost invariably they got drunk.
Having persevered with the rest of the program, they wondered why they fell.
We think the reason is that they never completed their housecleaning.
They took inventory all right, but hung on to some of the worst items in stock.

Hi everyone Craig, another alcoholic.  I know the last time I did the steps with a sponsor, I did them honestly.  In the past I was a chronic relapser... bad.  I burned the tread off the retread.  I tried something different for a change and I got honest.  It changed everything about me.  It was a weight off my shoulders.  I had a few things I was embarrassed about.  I asked my sponsor if I could share those with a stranger.  And sure enough he said I could.  So what I did was (and I wasn't suicidal,) I called the suicide hotline and talked with a stranger.  I explained to the person I was doing a 5th step and needed for someone to hear it.  He listened to me.  After I was done, I didn't hear anything.  I asked, are you still there, a couple of times.  This person finally said, I'm here, meaning he had listened to me.  I said thank you very much and I hung up the phone.  I had a good cry afterwards and then found a nice quiet place in my apartment to sit for an hour quietly.  I felt the power of God near me, had a spiritual experience too.  All in all this program works for me.  Thank you all.  God Bless.
