Three Pertinent Ideas
Our description of the alcoholic, the chapter to the agnostic, and our
personal adventures before and after make clear three pertinent ideas:
(a) That we were alcoholic and could not manage our own lives.
(b) That probably no human power could have relieved our alcoholism.
(c) That God could and would if He were sought.
- Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 60
Thought to Ponder
I can't, God can, I'll ask Him to.

I am Mike, a very grateful alcoholic. Until I was truly sold on those 3 ideas, I couldn't recover. I would continue to try something different. I thought I could do it. Once I truly admitted I was unable to control my drinking, or stay stopped no matter what I tried, then and only then was complete defeat. Those 3 ideas are measuring stones. When a person truly believes those 3 things they have all of the first 2 steps they need to move forward. And they also know the only direction to go. I didnt turn to God out of virtue. I did it because I had no other way. And from step 3 on, we aren't even dealing with alcohol anymore. We are dealing with the very thing that makes our life unmanagable. Selfish self-centeredness. This is where recovery begins. Thank you.
