Rarely
Rarely have we seen a person fail who has thoroughly followed
our path. Those who do not recover are people who cannot or will not,
completely give themselves to this simple program, usually men and
women who are constitutionally incapable of being honest with themselves.

I'm Larry and I'm an alcoholic. Been awhile since I shared in an AA meeting. The topic drew me in. I can build a little by my own experience hopefully. I spent my first 5 1/2 years without alcohol doing everything that was described in the lead share. I took a half hearted attempt at the steps (as I saw fit). I didn't go back to the bottle. But I'm sure I was going to. I realized in my pain that nothing at all had changed except I wasn't drunk. So I got to feel all my pain. That phrase came directly into play... rarely. How simple of a statement is that? And today, I can personally validate it by my own experience. The head pats solved nothing. The countless meetings solved nothing. Letting you love me until I could love myself solved nothing. "Just don't drink and go to meetings" was killing me and driving me back to the drink. I hear all the time that this is a "we" program. And I agree. When taken in context. Our book was written in past tense. The "we" of AA are those that thoroughly followed the path. Those that recovered. Not necessarily referring to everyone that walks through that door. I wasn't a we. I was a me. I had NOT followed "their" path.
