Tradition Ten
Alcoholics Anonymous has no opinion on outside issues;
hence the A.A. name ought never be drawn into public controversy
.

In this respect, we do not enter into public controversy, because
we know that our Society will perish if it does. We conceive the
survival and spread of Alcoholics Anonymous to be something
of far greater importance than the weight we could collectively
throw back of any other cause.

- Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, (Tradition Ten) p. 177

Thought to Ponder
The Twelve Steps tell us how it works;
the Twelve Traditions tell us why it works.

I am an alcoholic and a man under construction named Bryan. Sometimes I may hear something that I totally disagree with. Sometimes I may hear someone say something that actually angers me. I don’t have to tell them they’re wrong. I don’t even have to tell them how I feel. I can simply do one of the following things: 1. Do nothing, say nothing. Keep a poker face. 2. Do nothing, say nothing. Smile and nod 3. Say wow, I’ve never thought of it that way. (Notice how I am not saying I agree with them.) 4. Say wow I understand how you feel. (Notice how I am not saying that I understand why they feel that way, because I may not understand why.) I don’t have to inject my opinion And I don’t have to say I’m right and you’re wrong anymore. I don’t have to win every argument In fact, I try to avoid argument! That is part of the serenity that is promised by working this program and sticking to the 12 steps. Thank you for letting me share. Thank you for being here and keeping me in the solution. I love you all.
