In The Stillness
Once we have come into agreement with these ideas, it is really easy
to begin the practice of Step Three. In all times of emotional disturbance
or indecision, we can pause, ask for quiet, and in the stillness simply say
“God grant me the serenity to
accept the things I cannot change,
courage to change the things I can,
and wisdom to know the difference.
Thy will, not mine, be done.”
- Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, (Step Three) pp. 40-41

I'm Pammy and I have alcoholism. I always believed in God until I turned to the one of convenience. Was someone to blame when it didn't go my way or give myself credit instead when I was able to avoid serious consequences. My connection to God changed when I became an alcoholic because there was no getting out of that one no matter what. But I could ask for guidance to get me through one day at a time and pray for patience not to prepare for tomorrow. I would sometimes test to see if my prayers were heard when I looked at the news or dealt with someone who caused me some upset. And the change, well it wasn’t there in the way I wanted to go. That's why I really cling to the serenity prayer a lot and remind myself, or perhaps I am being reminded, that the only changes I need to work on is me. And in the past few years I have gotten even closer to God through prayers of gratitude for what I have and mostly for what I had for as long as I had it and in that I needed no convincing I knew how blessed I was and still am. So when I hit a bump or feel despair I find comfort in the fact it wont last long and boom there is another reason I have gratitude because my faith is stronger then it ever was. The path is clear as long as my ego stays out of the equation and that's the bit that needs daily maintenance. Thank you.
