Root Of Our Troubles
Selfishness—self-centeredness! That, we think, is the root of our
troubles. Driven by a hundred forms of fear, self-delusion, self-seeking,
and self-pity, we step on the toes of our fellows and they retaliate.
Sometimes they hurt us, seemingly without provocation, but we
invariably find that at some time in the past we have made decisions
based on self which later placed us in a position to be hurt.
So our troubles, we think, are basically of our own making.

Thought to Ponder
The smallest package in the world is an alcoholic all wrapped up in himself.

Howdy Friends. Joe S, Alcoholic. My mother used to tell me I was born selfish and angry. Self will run riot scratches the surface. (laugh) I stepped on peoples' toes, and they retaliated, so I retaliated more. It served me well at times, not so well other times. I developed a philosophy that I would do unto others "before" they did unto me. When I came to AA, with an honest desire not to die, things changed. I had struggled with step 2 for years. No "God" was ever going to run my life! I made a decision to try AA ONE more time, for a couple months. I'm still here. (laugh) I got a good sponsor and had a look at things honestly. I found a conception of "God" that worked for me. Step 3 is the basis of my program today. It was not that hard. My decision was to turn my will over, AND to work the rest of the steps to the best of my ability. Is the selfishness gone? Most of it. I don't hurt people anymore, I know that. Am I doing God's will? I dunno... I'm not God. I figure if I'm not doing my will, I'm moving in the right direction anyway. Thanks for letting me share.
