Our Steps
Next we launched out on a course of vigorous action, the first step of which
is a personal housecleaning, which many of us had never attempted. Though
our decision was a vital and crucial step, it could have little permanent effect
unless at once followed by a strenuous effort to face, and to be rid of, the
things in ourselves which had been blocking us. Our liquor was but a symptom.
So we had to get down to causes and conditions.

Thought to Ponder
Delay is dangerous, and rebellion may be fatal.

Pammy and I have alcoholism. Many times I have heard the most common excuse to delay, not to take action and work the steps. Myself along with others said, "Once I get better I will begin the steps." Speaking for myself, I did little towards self care in regards towards the mind and spirit. Til one day a fellow saw me struggling with my health and asked if I went to see a doctor about my symptoms. I said no because normally by the time I go I no longer have them so I lie and make up something trivial so I didn't waste their time. So now I don't bother to go at all. She looked at me and said, Damn, you're so used to living in pain you no longer know what can be fixed in you. That I was a self made victim playing russian roulette with my life even without alcohol. That statement upset me a lot, so much that I wanted to choke her lips, but it did make me think. How could I know whats wrong with me if I didn't seek out the answers? I began to work the steps and faithfully worked a weekly BB study. I began to learn about alcoholism and me. How I can apply this learning into my life and be productive again even if that means I have to tap outside AA for extra help. So in essence, working the steps helped me get better. It helped me find not only clarity, because without that, I wouldn't have known where I needed to know, what I needed to work on to find purpose and freedom. Thank you.
