Slogans
When one of us is in a dither to get something done or get somewhere in a hurry,
a friend may gently remonstrate, "'Easy Does It,'" remember?"
Then there's often a flash of annoyance at the adviser.
And that indicates the advice must have hit home, wouldn't you say?

Hi everyone, I'm Shawn, an alcoholic.  When I first came into the program, I hated the ‘bumper sticker’ sayings -- one day at a time, progress, not perfection, and it works if you work it!  But then I came to realize that there were actually deep meanings behind these clever words.  When I stopped drinking, I didn't have any idea what to do with my time.  All I did was drink all day, drink all night, and now I was stuck with all of this time on my hands.  My sponsor started to give me assignments, and I started to read the Big Book, and started to pray to my Higher Power, God.  I started to attend the meetings, and at first it was all "work" to me -- something that I had to do.  Then it somehow became a welcome comfort; comforting in that it was filling all of the time that I had to fill -- my usual drinking time.  I began to long for those meetings, assignments, readings, and prayer.  I began to crave them, and once I got into the rhythm of doing the work, the rewards began to follow.  I was feeling better -- much better than I ever felt when I was drinking.  I began to feel more at peace with myself and the world around me.  So I realized that the ‘bumper sticker’ was right!  It DOES work if you work it, but you must do the work first before you can experience the rewards that will follow.  Thanks so much for allowing me to share today!
